Tarifa forms part of two Natural Parks: Los Alcornocales National Park, and Estrecho National Park. From the two, we recommend Los Alcornocales National Park for hiking.

Hiking is an activity that you shouldn´t miss if you visit Tarifa, and you enjoy taking in nature. Why? Well, for a simple reason... there are very fiew places in the world where one can enjoy such a variety of fauna, both land animals and birds, surrounded by spectacular views of Africa.



Los Alcornales is a conglomeration of perfect and untouched mountains and acorn trees, and is one of the best preserved in the world.

Amongst its 165,000 hectars, you will see all kinds of predatory birds, from falcons to kite birds (in their migration period), or vultures, tawny birds, sheep, wild horses with their colts, donkeys, pigs, goats, deer, longhorns, Swiss cows, and other species. You will also see trees twisted nto strange shapes y the wind, and fastic views of the Strait of Gibraltar. On clear days, the view is spectacular; one can see the entire atlas of Morocco.

The most recommended rout is in the part called the "Mirador de Tarifa," on the highway that unites the city with Algeciras. From there, you can begin a fantastic route that ends in Los Llanos del Juncal, and here you can even visit La Sierra de la Luna.

There is also another rout through the Estrecho National Park that passes through the beach, and goes all the way to Bologna, ending at the Roman Ruins there on the beach.

This zone is a place where you can observa a multitude of species of flora and marine fauna, such as corals with their colored flowers and cetaceans. These creatures´ presence here have made it possible for the European Union to protect this special environment.
