Andalusians are strongly-built, compact horses, generally standing 15.2-16.2 hands. They move with a high, elegant action, which makes them particularly suitable for Haute École (or High School) Dressage. They usually have a lean, medium-length head with a convex profile and large eyes, a long but broad and sometimes cresty neck (particularly in stallions), a long, sloping shoulder, clean legs with good bone, short, strong cannons, and a thick, long, flowing mane and tail. The Andalusian has a reputation for a proud but cooperative temperament, sensitive and intelligent, able to learn quickly and easily when treated with respect and care.

Thanks to its excellent qualities of temperament, docility, great capacity for learning, and strong memory, the Andalusian horse is used for all kinds of riding in general, and is a particularly good companion for riding cross country. As well as being an excellent mount, hence its use by mounted bullfighters in the ring, it is also ideal for harnessing, as well as for sports. The Andalusian horse excels at High School dressage, of which it is the undisputable king, and has also gained notable success in classic dressage (normally dominated by German races), although a lot of development is still to be done in this area. It does not stand out for its speed or for jumping, but for its depth and character.

The Andalusian horse has traditionally been used as an excellent base and enhancer of other breeds of horse the world over, and although it has more recently usurped rather in this role by the appearance of P.S.I, the Andalusian race is still exported to many other countries to improve their breeds.

The beauty, majesticness, elegance and inimitable movements of this horse make it a spectacle where ever it is seen.
