Before tourism invaded Tarifa during the summer months, the town totally depended on its fishing industry. Even though it still carries plenty of importance, it has lost scope since the Moroccan government policy disallows the Spanish boats to fish within their waters.

Sportfishing from boats is becoming increasingly popular in Tarifa. In summer, some tourists and visitors station their boats in the small port in Tarifa so as to go underwater fishing.
